Whittier Overview

Whittier is tiny, tucked at the head of a deep fjord, and used mainly as a cruise and ferry port. Nearly everyone passes through on their way to or from Anchorage or the interior, rather than staying long in town.

A Little History

Whittier developed as a secretive military port in World War II, chosen for its protected location. A tunnel under the mountain became its main link to the outside world. After the military left, the town shrank; most residents now live in one large building, which explains the unusual layout.

Museums

Whittier has very limited formal museums. You may find small local displays or information panels about the tunnel and military history. Most visitors get their “museum” content from guide commentary on cruises or transfer tours.

  • Tip: If your transfer tour includes a stop at a wildlife center or other attraction away from Whittier, treat that as your main cultural stop.

Major Parks and Attractions

The scenery is the attraction: steep mountains, glaciers, and the fjord. Glacier and wildlife cruises depart right from the harbor. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is noteworthy in itself; it operates on alternating one-way schedules for road traffic and rail. Short walks around the harbor and to waterfalls are possible when weather cooperates. Conditions can be cold, rainy, and windy.

Nearby Places (Easy Day Trips)

Prince William Sound glacier cruises (half to full day), Portage Lake and the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center (often combined with transfers), and drives or rail journeys along the Seward Highway toward Anchorage, which is scenic and includes possible stops at wildlife centers and lookouts.

Shopping

A few seasonal shops near the harbor sell Alaska souvenirs and snacks.

  • Note: Shops and stands may open only when ships or tours are in port.

Food and Drink

Food options in Whittier are limited to a handful of cafes or restaurants when open. Many people eat on their ship or as part of their transfer excursion. Tipping follows US norms. Practical eating tips:

  • Don’t rely on Whittier for full meals if you’re transferring; plan to eat on the ship or at stops en route.
  • If you have extra time and want a local drink or snack, check hours as soon as you disembark.
  • Carry snacks and water, especially if you’re on a glacier cruise or tunnel-timed schedule.

Currency, Payments, ATMs

US dollar. Cards generally accepted at the few businesses. ATMs may be limited, so don’t count on withdrawing cash here.

Opening Hours and Holidays

Everything in Whittier runs on seasonal and ship-dependent schedules. In winter or shoulder seasons, services may be very limited. Holidays that may affect hours or services:

  • Jan 1
  • Jul 4
  • Dec 25

Practical City Notes

Weather can be harsh: cold rain, fog, and strong wind are common. The tunnel operates on a timed schedule; coaches and tours plan around it, but independent drivers must pay close attention to posted times. Make sure you’re back through the tunnel in time for ship departure or onward rail. English is universal.

Quick Plans

  1. 3–4 hours: Short harbor stroll, local viewpoints, and a simple café stop if open.
  2. 6–8 hours: Glacier and wildlife cruise in Prince William Sound.
  3. Full day: Glacier cruise plus a transfer with scenic stops along the Seward Highway, if your itinerary allows.
