Split Cruise Port
Split’s harbour sits beside Diocletian’s Palace and serves ferries and cruise ships.
Port of Split Overview
Cruise ships dock very close to the old town and Diocletian’s Palace. It’s a 5–10 minute walk from the pier to the palace gates. The seafront Riva promenade ties everything together.
A Little History
Split grew from the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement palace. Over centuries, the palace became a living town, which is why narrow lanes, shops, and homes sit inside old Roman walls. The port expanded as ferries linked islands and the mainland, keeping the waterfront busy.
Museums
Inside or near the palace: the Cathedral (with treasury), Temple of Jupiter, small city museums, and the basement halls. Outside: the Archaeological Museum and Mestrovic Gallery. Many close Monday or early afternoon.
- Tip: Spend more time exploring palace lanes than standing in museum queues; the palace itself is the museum.
Major Parks and Attractions
The palace complex is the main draw. The Riva promenade offers an easy seaside walk. Marjan Hill on the west side has viewpoints and trails if you want nature. Beaches like Bačvice are close to the port.
Nearby Places (Easy Day Trips)
Bačvice beach (short walk), Marjan Hill (half day), and island trips to Brač or Hvar (full day only if your call is long). Krka Waterfalls is a full-day excursion by bus.
Shopping
Within the palace and Riva area you’ll find souvenirs, jewelry, lavender products, and local crafts. Markets near the east side of the palace sell produce and simple goods.
- Note: Tourist pricing on the Riva is high; look inside the palace lanes for better value.
Food and Drink
Dalmatian dishes: grilled fish, octopus salad, pasticada stew, and plenty of gelato. Cafés dominate the Riva. Tipping 5–10 percent is common.
Practical eating tips:
- For quick food, slip into small konobas inside the palace instead of staying on the Riva.
- Reservations help in peak season.
- Heat builds inside the palace; step out to the Riva for breeze.
- Seafood quality varies; pick busy spots.
Currency, Payments, ATMs
Euro (Croatia switched in 2023). Cards widely accepted; ATMs all over town.
