Shimizu Overview

Shimizu is a smaller port city in Shizuoka Prefecture, known mainly as a gateway to Mount Fuji and for harbor views when the mountain is clear. The cruise pier is close to a simple waterfront area and fish markets. Most visitors choose between a nearby viewpoint-and-market day or a longer run toward Fuji.

A Little History

Shimizu developed around fishing, trade, and industry, later merging with Shizuoka City. The port remains active for cargo and fish, which you’ll see in the working harbor. Tourism grew around views of Fuji and the surrounding tea fields and coastal scenery.

Museums

Near the port, you’ll find the Shimizu Fish Market area and small related displays. The Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum (in nearby Yui) and other local museums focus on art and the historic Tokaido route. Many cruise visitors head instead to Fuji-area visitor centers or ropeways, which have their own small exhibits.

  • Tip: If mountain views are blocked, stick to markets, short viewpoints, and possibly a tea-plantation or local-history stop rather than chasing Fuji all day.

Major Parks and Attractions

Miho no Matsubara pine grove offers coastal views framed by Mount Fuji when skies are clear. Nihondaira plateau has a ropeway to Kunōzan Tōshōgū Shrine and wide views over the bay and tea fields. Shimizu’s fish market (often branded as a “fish theme park”) is an easy walk from port for sushi and seafood. Weather and cloud cover are the big wildcards for Fuji views.

Nearby Places (Easy Day Trips)

Miho no Matsubara (2–3 hours including travel and walking), Nihondaira and Kunōzan Tōshōgū (half day), Shizuoka city center (half day), and organized day tours toward Fuji Five Lakes or a specific Fuji viewpoint (often full day, check current schedule and drive times).

Shopping

Shimizu’s fish market area has seafood, snacks, and small souvenir stalls. Shizuoka city adds department stores and general shopping. Local specialties include green tea, wasabi products, and seafood.

  • Note: Smaller local shops may close one weekday and may shut early in the evening; department stores stay open later.

Food and Drink

Seafood dominates near the port: sushi, sashimi, and rice bowls with fresh fish. You’ll also find ramen and standard Japanese casual food. Tipping is not practiced.

Practical eating tips:

  • Eat seafood near the fish market for freshness and choice; lines at popular spots can be long at lunch.
  • If you’re on a longer Fuji excursion, ask whether there’s a planned lunch stop or pack snacks.
  • Many casual places have plastic food displays; pointing works if language is a barrier.
  • Check last-order times; some lunch spots close shortly after peak hour.

Currency, Payments, ATMs

Japanese yen. Cards are increasingly accepted, but some small eateries and market stalls are cash-only. ATMs that work with foreign cards are in convenience stores and major banks.

Opening Hours and Holidays

Fish market areas open earlier, with lunch-focused hours. Shops typically run 10:00–19:00. Many museums and local attractions close one weekday, often Monday. Weather and seasonal demand can affect ropeway and viewpoint operations; check current schedule.

Holidays that may affect hours or services:

  • Jan 1–3 (New Year)
  • Golden Week (late Apr–early May)
  • Obon (mid Aug)
  • Various national holidays

Practical City Notes

The port is easy to navigate on foot, but most key viewpoints require buses, taxis, or excursions. Public transport exists but can be slow and infrequent compared with big cities; tours are simpler if your call is short. English is limited outside tourist points; expect to rely on signage, simple phrases, and pointing.

Quick Plans

  1. 3–4 hours: Walk or shuttle to the fish market for lunch, then a short harbor or waterfront stroll, hoping for a glimpse of Fuji if skies are clear.
  2. 6–8 hours: Nihondaira plateau and Kunōzan Tōshōgū by ropeway, with a quick stop at the fish market on your return.
  3. Full day: Structured Mount Fuji excursion (viewpoints and maybe a lake or shrine) with a brief stop at a tea plantation or Shimizu market if time permits.
