Savona Overview

Savona is a small Ligurian city with an easy walkable core. The port is close to the center. Most visitors choose between a relaxed old town, a beach stroll, or a quick train to nearby towns.

A Little History

Savona grew as a medieval trading port and rival to Genoa. Fortresses and towers still overlook the harbor. Later industrial growth shaped the waterfront. Today the city is quieter than Genoa and leans on regional tourism.

Museums

Priamar Fortress hosts small exhibits and good views. The Civic Art Museum has Ligurian pieces. The Sistine Chapel of Savona (not the Rome one) offers guided visits on select schedules. Many museums close Monday.

• Tip: Priamar is more about the views than the exhibits; budget accordingly.

Major Parks and Attractions

Priamar Fortress, the medieval towers, the cathedral area, and the seaside promenade. Beaches sit just west of town. Crowds peak on summer weekends.

Genoa by train (full day if you explore fully), Albissola for ceramics (3–4 hours), and Finalborgo (half day by train/bus).
