Port of Mazatlan Overview

Mazatlan’s cruise pier is in the commercial port about 1.5 km from the historic center. Shuttles take you to the terminal gate, from which you can walk or taxi into town. The main split is between Old Mazatlan (Centro Histórico), the Malecón, and the Golden Zone’s beaches.

A Little History

Mazatlan grew on fishing and trade, later becoming a beach resort city. The old town retains restored plazas, theaters, and colorful facades, while the long Malecón connects to newer hotel zones.

Museums

Mazatlan isn’t a heavy museum port. The Angela Peralta Theater and small art galleries offer culture. A lighthouse hike (El Faro) is more of an outdoor sight than a museum, with panoramic views.

  • Tip: Treat Old Town streets and plazas as your cultural visit; don’t chase big museums.

Major Parks and Attractions

Centro Histórico (Plaza Machado, cathedral), the Malecón, beaches, cliff divers, and El Faro viewpoint. The Malecón is long—taxis help if you want to reach the far end.

Nearby Places (Easy Day Trips)

Golden Zone (half day), Stone Island for beach time (half day by water taxi), and El Faro hike (2 hours). Longer rural tours exist but need more time.

Shopping

Souvenir stalls near the terminal gate, shops in the Golden Zone, and local crafts in Old Town. Vanilla, silver, clothing, and beachwear are common.

  • Note: Prices vary widely; compare and don’t be rushed.

Food and Drink

Shrimp dishes, ceviche, pescado zarandeado, tacos, and plenty of bars. Tipping 10–20 percent is normal.

Practical eating tips:

  • Old Town has quieter, better-value restaurants than the Golden Zone.
  • Waterfront spots have views but may push drinks hard.
  • Confirm prices (pesos vs USD) before ordering.
  • Hydrate; heat and humidity spike midday.

Currency, Payments, ATMs

Mexican peso; USD widely accepted in tourist zones. Cards in most sit-down places. ATMs near malls and banks are safest.

Opening Hours and Holidays

Tourist areas stay open late. Old Town is more traditional with midday closures.

Holidays that may affect hours or services:

  • Jan 1
  • Feb Constitution Day
  • Mar Benito Juárez Day
  • Sep 16
  • Nov 20
  • Dec 25

Practical City Notes

Shuttle buses inside the port save a long industrial walk. Taxis are plentiful; agree on price first. Some areas near the port are rough—stick to known routes. English widely spoken in tourist zones.

Quick Plans

  1. 3–4 hours: Old Town walk (Plaza Machado, cathedral), coffee, and short Malecón break.
  2. 6–8 hours: Old Town + Malecón + beach time (Golden Zone or Stone Island).
  3. Full day: El Faro hike in the morning, long Old Town lunch, and afternoon beach.
