Hakata Cruise Port
Hakata is the primary cruise facility serving Fukuoka.
Hakata (Fukuoka) Overview
Hakata Port sits close to a modern, efficient city. Most cruisers head to temples, ramen spots, or easy shopping zones. Transit is simple.
A Little History
Hakata was a major port for centuries, trading with China and Korea. Merchants shaped the layout; shrines and temples cluster near old routes. Modern Fukuoka grew by merging with Hakata in the early 20th century.
Museums
Fukuoka Art Museum, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and Kyushu National Museum (in nearby Dazaifu) are the main stops. Mondays are typical closure days. Timed tickets may apply for big exhibitions.
- Tip: Dazaifu gets crowded; go early if combining with Kyushu National Museum.
Major Parks and Attractions
Ohori Park, Maizuru Park (with castle ruins), Kushida Shrine, Canal City shopping complex, and Tenjin for food. Crowds build mid-day around Canal City. Temples have uneven steps.
Nearby Places (Easy Day Trips)
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and Kyushu National Museum (half day by train), Itoshima beaches (half day), and Nanzoin Temple (half day by train plus short walk).
Shopping
Tenjin and Canal City cover fashion, electronics, and gifts. Yatai stalls near the river provide casual food.
- Note: Department stores often have good basement food halls.
Food and Drink
Hakata ramen is the star: thin noodles, pork broth. Many shops use ticket machines. Yatai serve skewers and simple plates. Practical eating tips:
- Expect lines for famous ramen shops.
- Keep cash for yatai; some don’t take cards.
- Slurping is normal.
Currency, Payments, ATMs
Japanese yen. Cards accepted widely but small places prefer cash. ATMs at 7-Eleven are foreign-card friendly.

Shops 10:00–20:00. Museums closed Monday. Holidays that may affect hours or services:
- Jan 1–3 (New Year)
- Golden Week (late Apr–early May)
